Trade & Trickery in the Canals of Amsterdam Scavenger Hunt
The interactive digital scavenger hunt offers school groups a unique way to explore Amsterdam and discover more about the city during the Dutch Golden Age. In small teams, pupils use their smartphones to follow clues and solve challenges as they try to earn a place aboard a trading ship about to leave the city. Together with twelve-year-old Jan, who dreams of escaping poverty and starting a better life, they must prove their skills in a series of tests involving orientation, speed and courage before the Morning Star sets sail. The route leads through Amsterdam’s historic canal district and takes around two hours. Along the way, pupils independently explore the history of Amsterdam as an international trading centre, while also discovering that the promises of wealth, adventure and opportunity often hid a much harsher reality. Teachers can either join in with the game themselves or use the time to take a well-earned break nearby.
